The first person in the entire Bible to give God a name wasn't a patriarch or a prophet. It was a pregnant runaway servant girl, alone in a desert.
When I think about mothers of the bible, I always think about them as spiritual giants. Serene. Certain. Sure of every step. Nothing like me on a Tuesday afternoon with my toddler (who I still call my baby :D) on my lap, pregnant/tired, and having tons of things to do.
Then I studied them. They were exhausted. Disappointed. Grieving. Some of them got it wrong.
And God chose to include them in the bible anyway.
Scripture is far more honest about mothers than we usually are with each other.
In Part 1 of this series on biblical motherhood, we study four mothers in the Bible, Hannah, Jochebed, Hagar and Naomi, and what they teach us.
There's a moment in Hannah's story where everything shifts before a single circumstance changes. There's a skill Jochebed had that most people read right past.
If you've ever wondered what does the Bible say about motherhood or what does the Bible say about mothers when you're the one who feels unseen, this one's for you. Real lessons from the mothers in the Bible, for real Christian motherhood, with the Scripture right there so you can study it yourself.
Next week is Part 2: the Shunammite woman, Lois and Eunice, and Mary, plus three verses about Jesus' own childhood that I now pray over my son by name.

In this episode of Good Warfare: Biblical Motherhood for the Modern World, Lily returns after a season of pause to share an honest life update and a timely message for first-time Christian moms. This two-part episode blends transparency with biblical encouragement as we explore what it truly means to look back with gratitude and look forward with hope in motherhood.
Rooted in Philippians 3:13, this episode speaks to moms navigating criticism, comparison, spiritual warfare, bitterness, and the tension between knowing God’s Word and living it out. Lily opens up about family life, work transitions, spiritual discernment, and the refining work God has been doing in her heart—especially learning to uproot bitterness through prayer and Scripture.
Together, we talk about:
-
Letting go of hurtful words, past mistakes, and comparison
-
Releasing shame without denying the past
-
Replacing bitterness with Scripture and prayer
-
Trusting God’s timing in motherhood, work, and calling
-
Becoming doers of the Word, not hearers only
If you’re a first-time mom longing to raise your child with biblical conviction while walking in grace, hope, and obedience, this episode will encourage you to move forward—faithfully and free.
